Assessment

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read?

I am left feeling slightly uncomfortable after reading this short story, "Bloodchild." This seems to have an underlying analogy, from a metaphorical standpoint, but to what I am not too sure. Slavery? There seems to be many themes taking place, such as these insect-like Tlic using humanoid Terran to carry their young. But there seems to be an enslavement by the Tlic, making the Terran live on a "reserve" and only use them to carry their spawn. Super weird.

2. What connections did you make to this text? discuss the elements you connected with?

Frankly, it was hard to connect with anything going on in this story. But if I were to go out on a limb, something that struck or resonated with me was how it was decided by the family and Tlic who the Tlic was going to implant their young in, the choice was usually taken away from the Terran carrying. This reminds me of in past older years when families decided who you were to marry and bear children with, taking away any choice or opinion, usually the woman, would have.

3. What changes would you make to adapt this story in another medium? what medium would you use? what changes would you make?

I think this short story could be well developed into a full book. That way you could have much more backstory and buildup into understanding this world and what exactly the Tlic and Terran are. Much more information and descriptions would be helpful, along with building the relationships between the main characters. Or, I think this could make into a TV show well if expanded upon. The ability to see the Tlic created physically would be astounding and would help gain a wider audience I believe. It also might help convey the main theme and underlying analogy better.

What will the future look like in 15 years?

Well, if we make it that long without an apocalypse, or nuclear holocaust, I think the future is looking rather bleak. Everyone is physically attached to their phones, if they're not implanted already. social anxieties are at an all time high due to the lack of interactions with the world around. Consumerism has taken off even more than we could have ever projected. Trees are now being made in factories and installed into dirt grounds where forests used to lie.

50 Years?

The year is almost 2070, forests, grasslands, and wild areas are a thing a of the past. Every available space has been torn down and made way for shopping plazas and housing that span up to 50 stories high. The lower class seems to get lower and lower and the higher gets higher, soon the middle class folk dissolve and you are either penthouse suite or ground level grime. There is no retirement anymore, if you are not of extreme wealth. The poor just work until they drop dead. Animals can only exist in zoos, which is hardly an existence. The craze of technology and AI from years past has now turned to an overrun dwelling, controlling us in all of our daily lives, mostly without even knowing.
